Remembering Meagher in his home town, 2011 1948 | Origins of the Flag

In Waterford, a regular festival called the “1848 Tricolour Celebration” recalls Meagher’s role in the development of the Irish tricolour.

The organising committee describe it as follows: “The 1848 Tricolour Celebration is a cultural and historical event, which commemorates the first unveiling of the Irish Tricolour flag by Thomas Francis Meagher at 33 the Mall in Waterford city”.

The city commemorates its own Meagher day, 7 March, the anniversary of “the first raising of the Irish flag at 33 the Mall in Waterford”.
