Correlation and Line of Best Fit

Activity One
Activity Two

- Correlation Coefficient

Use the following GeoGebra file and student worksheet to learn how the line of best fit and the correlation coefficient are affected by changes in the data.

Instructions:

  1. Click and drag the points around the screen and examine the effect on the correlation coefficient and on the line of best fit.
  2. Click on the check boxes to show the correlation coefficient
and the line of best fit.

- Correlation and Line of Best Fit

The purpose of this task sheet is to explore the relationship between the pattern of the points in a scatter plot, the correlation coefficient, line of best fit, outliers, the point (Mean of x s, Mean of y s) and the numbers of points in each quadrant.

 Instructions:

  1. Use the GeoGebra file in conjunction with the student activity.
  2. Click on the mini boxes to identify the label on the GeoGebra file.

Note:
Calculating the point (Mean of x s, Mean of y s) and using it to split the plane into 4 quadrants is not specifically mentioned in the syllabus. However, it is a helpful way of learning about relationships in the data.
