Headline Stories

A headline story is a set of information presented in words or pictures, providing the setting for a problem without the actual problem. Pupils are challenged to create maths questions, which can be posed and solved, based on the information presented.

By creating their own questions, pupils are using language in a meaningful context at their own level. The questions pupils create can be very revealing and could be a useful assessment tool. These activities are very practical in the multi-grade setting as the pupils are all working at their own level with just one stimulus. Through effective questioning, the teacher can either support or extend pupils’ thinking.

Take a look at this short video from our ‘STEM in a Bubble’ webinar which explores headline stories further. A complete recording of this webinar along with the resources referenced is available here.

Below you will find some headline stories to try with the pupils in your class.
