A number talk is a powerful teaching strategy that enables pupils to make sense of mathematics and communicate their ideas. It can provide a context for pupils to clarify their own thinking while investigating and applying number relationships.
A number talk involves selecting a maths question, such as 18+7 and asking the pupils to solve it using various strategies outside of the traditional algorithm. Some pupils may break numbers apart, or count on to the nearest ten to help them to solve the question.
The tasks below provide a wide range of number talk examples to cater for every class level. All tasks allow for rich discussion and justification of multiple strategies and approaches to finding an answer.
