Every hour someone in Ireland suffers from a stroke.
Every day, hundreds of Irish people are diagnosed with heart disease. - Irish Heart Foundation
The following collection consists of presentations, lesson activities, animations and video clips to help students learn about the heart. Resources tie into the Junior Cycle Science Biological Science strand, learning outcome 4.

This documentary is about groundbreaking research being done by neuroscientist Dr. Karen Doyle at CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices at NUI Galway.
For the first time ever they are analysing thousands of stroke-causing blood clots collected from patients around the world. These little bundles of cells could carry a wealth of information, which could point to big improvement to people's lives.

Measuring your Heart Rate
The following videos demonstrate how and where students can locate their pulse and measure their heart rate.
To check your pulse at your wrist, place two fingers between the bone and the tendon over your radial artery — which is located on the thumb side of your wrist. When you feel your pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds. Multiply this number by four to calculate your beats per minute. Source: Mayo Clinic

CPR 4 Schools
CPR 4 Schools is a programme for post primary schools supported by the Irish Heart Foundation and the Bank of Ireland. CPR 4 Schools gives students the confidence to perform hands-only CPR, use an AED and know what to do when someone is choking. The programme fits nicely into Wellbeing and there is also a Transition Year (TY) programme which can be used for the Young Social Innovators (YSI) or An Gasice programmes.
