Mexico’s Independence Day is a nationwide public holiday in that country to celebrate freedom from Spanish rule. Día de la Independencia marks the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which started a revolt against the Spaniards.

In the classroom: Learn more about Mexico using World Book Online. Use the compare countries tool to compare Mexico with another country, say Ireland.
