This is also known as 'Old New Year' as it refers to the Julian Calendar which predates the Gregorian Calendar. It is all quite complicated really but basically most of the world now follows what is known as the Gregorian Calendar but in some Eastern Orthodox countries the old Julian calendar is still important.
