Candlemas

Friday, 2 February 2024

Candlemass is an old Christian festival that marks the occassion when Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem in accordance with the old Jewish traditions and is traditionally celebrated by lighting candles. For many it marks the end of the 'Christmas period'.

Of course February 2 is also important by being the mid point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.

In the classroom: Learn a little more about Candlemas - see what traditions are associated with the day. The Woodlands Junior School has a short piece on the day and its origins.
