Known as Lá Bealtaine - it is traditionally a Celtic festival. In ancient times it was considered important as it was mid way between the spring equinox and the summer solstice (actually the real mid way was closer to May 5!) In modern times the day is associated with workers rights. One of the European traditions associated with May Day is dancing around the Maypole.
