  • observe, discuss and identify a variety of plants and animals in different habitats in the immediate environment
  • sort and group living things into sets

  • appreciate that living things have essential needs for growth
  • become familiar with the life cycles of common plants and animals

  • group and sort living things into sets according to certain characteristics
  • investigate how plants respond to light
  • observe, identify and explore a variety of living things in local habitats and environments
  • recognise that trees are plants
  • understand that seasonal changes occur in living things and examine the changes in plant and animal life during the different seasons

  • record and display simple weather observations in systematic way using graphs, charts and common meteorological symbols
  • study weather variations during the year and their influence on plants, animals and humans
  • use analysis of weather recordings to begin to associate simple descriptions of clouds, amount of cloud cover, wind direction and other conditions with particular types of weather; make and test weather predictions
  • use simple equipment to observe and record weather phenomena

Suggestions for use: Materials required for each component are clearly listed. The activities need a little planning but they are very practical and should engage the pupils.
