We, the pupils of S.N. Thóin Ré Gaoith, proudly remember our ancestors who made many sacrifices for a better Ireland, down through the centuries. We remember especially, the men and women of 1916, whom we commemorate at this time.
In this year of 2016, we set out our vision, our hopes and dreams for our beloved country. We want to live in a happy and fulfilled society. It is our belief that the family unit must be to the forefront of our nation. We hope that Ireland continues to be a friendly, respectful and welcoming nation and that we remain charitable to those in need. Equal and fair rights, opportunities and treatment should be afforded to all citizens of our country. We believe in inclusion of all people in our society and also, in tolerance of diversity. We recognise the right to freedom of choice for all, while also understanding that the law of the land must be obeyed. We are proud of the great sense of community in Ireland and we hope that this continues. We value highly our democracy and we urge all over 18s to vote in all elections. We love living in our peaceful land and we wish for it to remain free of war and trouble. We value our Catholic ethos, while also respecting all other religions. We believe that rural Ireland should be supported, funded and protected so that life in the countryside can be sustained. We think it is important to have a close bond with other countries, especially those with us in the EU.
We think that there should be no homeless people – every human being deserves a bed at night and a proper roof over his/her head. We believe that a decent health service should be available to all people in this country. Access to a good and free education is essential for young and old too. In our Information Age, we believe that all parts of Ireland should have a proper broadband service. We want to live in a society that has proper facilities, amenities and services in rural and urban areas. We must also be provided with a proper transport system.
It is our dream that nobody would experience poverty in Ireland. We ask our government to give rightful pensions to those who are in their golden years. We believe that new businesses should be supported to help provide employment and that workers should get fair pay for an honest day’s work. We ask for fair taxation and charges too. Sadly, many people have had to emigrate from Ireland over the years – we hope that people will emigrate only by choice. Unemployed people should be appropriately supported financially.
We wish for a safe society to live in. We want all people to stay away from crime and violence and to abide by the laws. We should always feel safe at home, at school, in the workplace and in society. We must take proper care of our elderly and children, who are the weakest in society. We believe that there should be enough food to feed everyone properly but we must also strive for healthy eating habits for all. We hope that Ireland remains neutral and that terrorism stays away. Safe use of social media and technology is an important consideration for us too. We want to live in an unpolluted, clean and green Ireland and we must be active in protecting our planet from any threats.
There are a lot of dangers in our world - we wish to live in a society where there is no alcohol misuse and there are no illegal drugs available. The modern obsession with celebrity culture can be very harmful too, so, we say, “keep it real!” We encourage a proactive society, where everyone gets involved and doesn’t wait for someone else to do the right thing.
We desire to keep our Irish language alive and strong - “Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam”. We are proud of and we respect our national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann, and our tricolour. We cherish dearly our unique culture, traditions and our national sports.
May we always love Ireland! We hope to live happy lives, until we are very old, in this wonderful country.
