British Council - Learn English
Supports reading, writing and speaking English. The site is designed for children learning English as a second language but resources may also be used by children at Primary level and is ideal for both integrating lessons on various topics or enabling students to complete reading and writing acitivities online and at their own pace.
How it maps to the curriculum
Strand: Reading
Content objective: This resource should enable a child to:
- build up a sight vocabulary of common words from personal experience, from experience of environmental print, and from books read
- encounter early reading through collaborative reading of large-format books and language-experience material
- engage in shared reading activities
- experience the reading process being modelled
- handle books and browse through them
- learn to isolate beginning and final sounds in written words
- learn to isolate the beginning sound of a word or syllable
- learn to isolate the part of a word or a syllable which allows it to rhyme with another word or syllable
- use knowledge of word order, illustration, context and initial letters to identify unknown words
Suggestions for use: Internet access permitting, children can read a story (appropriate to their ability) in the story section and complete the acitivites either in pairs or individually. They can choose a topic of interest and complete the corresponding online and offline activities.

- engage in personal reading
- find information and share it with others
- learn to find books in a classroom or school library
- perform simple information retrieval tasks
- read aloud to share a text with an audience
- read from a range of children's literature, choosing material for reading during silent reading periods

Why is it Resource of the Week?
- There is a wide selection of high-interest topics covered, such as Family and Friends, Music, Bugs, Pets, School, Food, etc
- It is broken down into seven sections, namely, Games, Print and Do, Songs, Stories, Listen Read Write, Topics and Parents
- Resources are marked according to language difficulty, i.e simple or more difficult
- It caters for all primary classes but has a very good under seven section
- Activites on the site may also be used to motivate reluctant readers
