A History of Ireland in 100 Objects

Online version of a fully illustrated hardback book which came out of a series by Fintan O'Toole in the Irish Times. Includes 14 educational lesson plans developed by teachers that focus on 14 of those objects (i.e., Mesolithic fish trap, flint macehead, Tara torc, Tara brooch, Monasterboice tall cross, Viking slave chain, Waterford Charter Roll, Salamander pendant, King William's gauntlets, Daniel O'Connell's chariot, empty cooking pot, emigrant's teapot, reclining Buddha and Eileen Gray chair).

How it maps to the curriculum

5-6
SESE History

Strand: Early People /Ancient Societies

Strand unit: Bronze Age Peoples

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:

  • become familiar with some aspects of the lives of these peoples
  • examine critically, and become familiar with, evidence we have which tells us about these people, especially evidence of these people which may be found locally and in Ireland, where appropriate

Suggestions for use: The website contains wonderful images of the objects which would work well on the IWB, as well as factsheets, quizzes and even videos. The specific lesson plans for teachers are fantastic with excellent ideas for integration and extension activities.
