National Active School Week

The Department of Education and Skills and Healthy Ireland encourage ALL schools to organise an Active School Week (ASW) as part of their annual school calendar.

The Active School Week (April 23rd - 27th) initiative is about providing FUN and INCLUSIVE physical activity opportunities for ALL members of the school community. It allows schools to reinforce the message that not only is physical activity good for you but it also very enjoyable. It provides schools with an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the physical activity opportunities that are available in their locality and to work collaboratively with students, parents and members of the community.

Active School Walkway: As part of active school week a new Active School Walkway pack has been produced and provided to all schools that have an Active School Flag. The Walkway pack comprises colourful and durable outdoor sign posts to mark out a walking or running route around their school grounds. The sign posts are pre-marked for orienteering making them an excellent support to the PE curriculum.

Active School Flag: The Active School Flag initiative seeks to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. This recognition is gained by schools who have demonstrated that they have initiated and implemented a strategy for developing such a community of active participants. Schools that reach this standard and demonstrate that they have done so are rewarded with a Flag that they can display outside their schools. The awarding of this flag indicates that the school has reached a particular standard in promoting sport with the school and in association with parents and other bodies in the community. Once awarded the Flag remains valid for a period of three years.
