Story Map - Sir Ernest Shackleton

Added: 09 Jun 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Guide/notes

Uses maps with narrative text to tell the story of Shackleton's expeditions to the Antarctic. Briefly covers the earlier Discovery and Nimrod expeditions and goes into greater detail on the Endurance expedition - covering the crew, the mission, the losing of the ship and the eventual escape and rescue.

How it maps to the curriculum

5-6
SESE History

Strand: Story

Strand unit: Stories from the lives of people in the past

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:

  • become aware of the lives of women, men and children from different social, cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, including the lives of 'ordinary' as well as 'more famous' people
  • discuss the actions and feelings of characters
  • discuss the chronology of events in a story
  • use appropriate timelines

Suggestions for use: Could be presented in class. Probably the best feature here are the maps. The text is a little detailed, particularly on the discovery Expedition. But the site would be really useful to present while talking around it.
