How Earth's Tilted Axis Causes Seasons

Added: 15 Sep 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Simulation

An animation connecting science to geography. Higher ability students can delve deeper into the problem solving capabilities with this interactive animation. Students can look up the latitude of various countries including Ireland. Using the animation, students can set the latitude to that of their researched country. Students can compare the length of day and night for various countries. In comparing the length of day and night, students are exploring the reason for the seasons.

Suggestions for use: Assign students the driving question "Why are some countries length of sunlight longer than others?" Higher ability students can use this animation as a means of a clue. The clue is less obvious and involves more research in latitudes.
