A series of lesson plans, videos and resources for 1st to 6th Class focusing on responsible recreational use of Ireland's natural environments. Children will discover Ireland's Natural Environment (and how to care for it) through fun and engaging activities. There are 5 lessons for each class level. Complete all the lessons and your class can get a certificate and become Leave No Trace champions!

Strand: Environ. Awareness & Care

Strand unit: Caring for my locality

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:

  • become aware of ways in which the environment can be polluted or harmed
  • begin to realise that people, animals and plants depend on each other
  • identify and help to implement simple strategies for protecting, conserving and enchancing the environment
  • identify, discuss and appreciate the natural and human features of the local environment
  • identify, discuss and implement simple strategies for improving and caring for the environment
  • observe and develop an awareness of living things in a range of habitats in local and wider environments
  • observe similarities and differences among plants and animals in different local habitats
  • realise that there is both an individual and a community responsibility for taking care of the environment

Suggestions for use: Lessons included also cover various strands and strand units of the Science, History, SPHE and PE curricula. Children will investigate Irish wildlife and farm animals, explore natural materials found in the environment, examine artefacts, learn about how litter can affect humans and wildlife and learn about the Leave No Trace principal when exploring outdoors.

This resource should enable a child to:

  • examine a number of ways in which local and other environments could be improved or enhanced
  • identify and discuss a local, national or global environmental issue
  • realise that there is a personal and community responsibility for taking care of and conserving environments

Suggestions for use: Lessons included also cover various strands and strand units of the Science, History, SPHE and PE curricula. Children will learn about different habitats and the species that live in them, investigate the effect of footsteps on soil and vegetation, investigate artefacts, investigate how long rubbish takes to break down and learn about the Leave No Trace principal when exploring outdoors.

This resource should enable a child to:

  • come to appreciate individual, community and national responsibility for environmental care
  • examine a number of ways in which local and other environments could be improved or enhanced
  • identify and discuss a local, national or global environmental issue

Suggestions for use: Lessons included also cover various strands and strand units of the Science, History, SPHE and PE curricula. Children will learn about different habitats and the species that live in them, investigate the purpose of tracks and trails, examine artefacts, conduct a school litter survey and learn about the Leave No Trace principal when exploring outdoors.
