Presentation produced as a Junior Cycle history resource for 'Art and the Great Hunger', an exhibition of artwork associated with the Great Famine from the collection of Quinnipiac University. This presentation contains representations of living conditions in Ireland for ordinary people in the 19th century. There is a worksheet to accompany this presentation to allow students to engage in the lesson activities outlined in this presentation.
Strand: 2. The History of Ireland
Strand unit: 7. The Great Famine
Suggestions for use: This presentation is a full lesson designed to engage students in identifying living conditions in Ireland during the era of the Great Famine and to extract historical knowledge about living conditions from works of art. Activity 1 is a Blue Sky Thinking activity: students work in pairs to answer the question 'What do you think living conditions were like for ordinary people living in Ireland in 1845?' Teachers will need to provide each pair of student with a post it note to complete this activity (instructions in presentation). For activity 2, distribute the worksheet that accompanies this activity to all students. They can work alone or in groups to answer the questions that accompany the images of the artworks. The presentation also contains questions for a class discussion and an extension activity that can be given as homework.
