Ag. Science Soil Chemistry Explained

Added: 19 Sep 2018 Contributor: Rory McShane Resource type: Guide/notes / Lesson Plan / Presentation / Reference

Cations, Colloids, and Polarised water are a number of terms that can be quite confusing to students. This presentation gives a need-to-know on the different parts of soil related chemistry including cation exchange, liming, flocculation, and the difference between capillary and hydroscopic water.

How it maps to the curriculum

Agriculture Science

Strand: 2. Soils

Strand unit: 2.1 Chemical Properties

Suggestions for use: Soil chemistry is often skipped or explained poorly. Spending more time trying to demonstrate something as simple as opposites attract in relation to colloids and cations is crucial for students to grasp flocculation, liming, CE, etc. I usually introduce magnets as a comparison for students to come to terms with the force of attraction and therefore how difficult or how much energy is required to break that bond. The sketches are only suggestions for your own diagrams to draw on the board.
