Zara's Family 1912 - 1922

Primary school project around a Co Cork family and their decision to join the army and fight in the Great War of 1914-18. The project also explores life after the war for a Protestant family living in Co Cork and how they were affected by the War of independence. Another of Zara's relatives is Sam Maguire, after whom the All-Ireland football trophy is named. This essay was a winning entry in the 2015 All-Island History Competition.

This resource should enable a child to:

  • express or record stories through oral and written forms, art work, music, drama, mime, movement and information and communication technologies
  • use appropriate timelines

Suggestions for use: Really interesting story that could be demonstrated to children. Could also be used as an example for further projects.
