History Essay Competition 2017
Decade of Centenary Essay Winners
These projects were prizewinners in the 2017 All-Island History Competition for Primary and Post-Primary schools.
The competition was sponsored by the Department of Education and Skills, Mercier Press, History Ireland and the School of History, UCC. Categories for the competition were: Revolution in Ireland, Ireland and World War 1, Women's History and a Local/ Regional Issues.
Entries for the competition were received from primary and post-primary schools throughout the island of Ireland and the prize winners came from Galway, Clare, Kildare, Dublin, Westmeath and Cork.
2017 History Winner - John Redmond’s Speech in Tuam, December 1914

The project explores the Speech from John Redmond (First Home Rule Party Leader) in Tuam, December 1914. Details include a description of Tuam in 1914, the speech and the reaction to in Tuam to John Redmond's speech. Students have also documented some men from Tuam who died in the WW1.

2017 History Competition Winner - Military Maneuvers - The Forgotten Battle of Pike's Bridge.

The project explores the forgotten Battle of Pike Bridge and the death of Anthony O'Reilly (past pupil). Research came from local historians, analysing Scoilnet Maps, census archive, Abbey National School Attendance Teacher Report 1911, Millitary Archive, visit to the location of battle, Irish Times archive, the national archive of Ireland and a visit to Anthony O'Reilly's grave.
