Tradtime - Learning you the Tin-Whistle & other Irish Instruments

Added: 02 Jun 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Guide/notes / Audio / Video / Tool

Tradtime™ was founded in 2011 by Willie Larkin, well known musician from Co. Limerick, to introduce Irish music to all primary school children. His passion for music and for passing our musical heritage on to future generations has established a vibrant company, working with primary schools nationally. Our software Web App. is available to all schools for free, with an option for families to buy the App. for home using a school discounted code. 10% of all school licences bought by families will be refunded to schools at the end of the school year to spend on music education.
Supported by Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Tradtime™ provides both free software option and high quality, affordable tutor-led programmes to schools. Our programme works alongside the school music curriculum and our programmes can commence at any time in the school year.

Willie had spent +25 years teaching traditional music in schools and saw the potential in establishing a company to promote what he was doing as an individual. Today Tradtime™ is working in +100 schools in Munster, Connaught and Leinster, employing +20 tutors and 2 full-time office staff. Our Unique Selling Point is our Web App (software). We are actively promoting our software to all schools for free as a resource for teachers in the classroom. This provides an alternative to schools who do not wish to/cannot incur the cost of tutors, and our Web App enables all teachers to follow our music programme, irrespective of whether they grew up in a music tradition or not.

Strand: Performing

Strand unit: Playing instruments

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:

  • identify and perform simple two-note or three-note tunes by ear or from simple notation
  • play some percussion instruments with confidence
  • use percussion instruments to show the beat or rhythm in accompanying songs or rhythmic chants

Suggestions for use: Our programme offers everybody the opportunity to learn in a non-competitive, fun environment with their friends, while enjoying the support of their teacher/tutor and our Interactive Web App. Children thrive when they become involved in music. It gives them confidence, a sense of pride and achievement and allows them fantastic life opportunities. Music heightens their memory and concentration, teaches children co-operation, the sharing of ideas and time. Music enhances everybody’s life, and at Tradtime™ our vision is to offer children the opportunity in school to engage with music in a very practical way. We are extremely proud of, and confident, that our software can provide every school with a valuable new teaching method which will retain our musical heritage, in a way that is appealing to children. In addition to music classes our Tradtime™ dance classes teach a wide variety of dancing including solo, ceilí and set-dancing. We appeared on RTE News2Day on Jun e 2nd (yesterday) and an Nuacht on RTE” & TG4. You can see both those programmes on our facebook page or on RTE player.
