Pinwheel Turbine - STEM Activity

Added: 08 Aug 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Guide/notes

In this activity, students will create a pinwheel. They will use this pinwheel to make connections between the pinwheel and wind turbines to learn how wind energy works.

How it maps to the curriculum

Strand: 4. Physical World

Strand unit: 7. Design,Build and Test (Energy Transforms)

Suggestions for use: Students should watch the video attached in related resources prior to designing their own turbine. Turbine instructions should be given to groups. Students within the groups must work together to solve how to create the pinwheel turbine. Students test their turbines out outside. Groups should come back into the class and re-design turbines so that they can capture more wind to make the blades rotate faster.
