Syrian Refugee Cards

Added: 15 Aug 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Guide/notes

36 pieces of evidence about Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan by Oxfam. The cards are designed to promote critical thinking and deep questioning. Oxfam's schools resources outline the impact of the crisis on refugee children in Lebanon and Jordan, and suggest how young people can effectively respond.

How it maps to the curriculum

5-6
SESE Geography

Strand: Human Environments

Strand unit: People and Other Lands

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:

  • become aware of various ethnic, religious and linguistic groups of peoples in Ireland, Europe and the wider world
  • learn to value and respect the diversity of peoples and their lifestyles in these areas and other parts of the world
  • study some aspects of the environments and lives of people in one location in Europe and one location in another part of the world

Suggestions for use: When each group has selected nine rights they should begin working through the 32 Syria refugee cards and, in each case, ask critically: ‘To what extent does this child or these children enjoy any of the rights my group has selected?’ A group scribe should take notes including supporting evidence. If time is short the number of cards could be reduced.
