Observing Features of the Beach

Added: 20 Dec 2016 Contributor: Clare Quigley Resource type: Lesson Plan

The aim of the lesson plan is for children to become aware of, explore and discuss some aspects of natural environments, focusing on the seashore. The children are enabled to identify items associated with the seashore (eg. shells, bucket and spade, suncream, driftwood) then sort and classify these items as natural or man-made.

How it maps to the curriculum

Strand: Natural Environments

Strand unit: The Local Natural Environment

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:

  • become aware of, explore and discuss some aspects of natural environments in the immediate locality of the school
  • observe, collect and investigate a variety of natural materials in the local environment

Suggestions for use: Teach as a whole class lesson or take elements of the lesson for Aistear activities (eg. sorting seashore related items into natural and manmade). If using this as an Aistear station it could be extended by having the children draw the items on the sorting sheet once classified. Add collected items to a beach themed classroom display.
