Blending and Reading CVC words activity

Added: 14 Jul 2017 Contributor: Sharon Hogan Resource type: Audio / Video / Reference

A YouTube video showing how to make and use an activity to encourage emergent readers to move from blending words to reading words.
The focus is on CVC words and word families.
Once large scale versions of CVC words are made, pupils then can blend them by pressing a button under each sound. A little car is then driven quickly under the letters to encourage speedier blending, aka reading.
The video links to a blog where it is possible to buy a ready made pack of this activity.

Strand unit: Competence and Confidence in Using Language

Suggestions for use: This activity would be excellent to use during literacy station teaching (e.g. during literacy lift-off or power hour etc...). Each pupil could have their own base board and car with a shared pool of words in the centre. It could be easily differentiated by providing different words to different groups. The activity could also be extended to include CVCC words with 4 buttons for more competent/able readers or words containing digraphs. This activity would also be very suitable for use in the classroom as an early finisher activity. It could also be used to send home to help parents understand the move from blending words to reading words.
