Presentation produced as a Junior Cycle history resource for 'Art and the Great Hunger', an exhibition of artwork associated with the Great Famine from the collection of Quinnipiac University. This presentation contains information on the life of Daniel O'Connell and his campaign for Catholic Emancipation. It is based on a painting from the Quinnipiac University showing O'Connell attending the consecration of a catholic church in Cork following the granting of Catholic Emancipation. There is a worksheet to accompany this presentation to allow students to engage in the lesson activities outlined in this presentation/lesson.

Suggestions for use: This presentation is a full lesson designed to engage students in learning about the life of Daniel O'Connell and his key achievement of Catholic Emancipation and to extract historical knowledge about O'Connell and Emancipation based on a historical painting. There is a worksheet to accompany this presentation which should be distributed to students at the beginning of the lesson. Activity 1 is a think-pair-share designed to extract prior knowledge (if any) that students might have about O'Connell. There are teacher-led slides outlining the life of O'Connell and his key achievement of Catholic Emancipation. Students are required to study a historical painting and answer questions based on this painting using their worksheets. They are also required to assess the value of this painting as a source of information for historians.
