Suggestions for use: This presentation is a full lesson designed to engage students in identifying living conditions in Ireland during the era of the Great Famine and to extract historical knowledge about living conditions from works of art.
Activity 1 is a Blue Sky Thinking activity: students work in pairs to answer the question 'What do you think living conditions were like for ordinary people living in Ireland in 1845?' Teachers will need to provide each pair of student with a post it note to complete this activity (instructions in presentation).
For activity 2, distribute the worksheet that accompanies this activity to all students. They can work alone or in groups to answer the questions that accompany the images of the artworks.
The presentation also contains questions for a class discussion and an extension activity that can be given as homework.

Suggestions for use: This presentation is a full lesson designed to engage students in identifying the reasons for Irish emigration and to extract historical knowledge about emigration from works of art. For activity one, divide the class into small groups of 3 or 4 students. Assign each group a number, 1 or 2. Depending on their number, the students will identify either the pull or push factors for emigration from Ireland. They then 'pair up' with a group that has their opposite number and share their findings.

It is based on a painting from the Quinnipiac University showing O'Connell attending the consecration of a catholic church in Cork following the granting of Catholic Emancipation. There is a worksheet to accompany this presentation to allow students to engage in the lesson activities outlined in this presentation/lesson.

Suggestions for use: This presentation is a full lesson designed to engage students in learning about the life of Daniel O'Connell and his key achievement of Catholic Emancipation and to extract historical knowledge about O'Connell and Emancipation based on a historical painting. There is a worksheet to accompany this presentation which should be distributed to students at the beginning of the lesson.
Activity 1 is a think-pair-share designed to extract prior knowledge (if any) that students might have about O'Connell. There are teacher-led slides outlining the life of O'Connell and his key achievement of Catholic Emancipation. Students are required to study a historical painting and answer questions based on this painting using their worksheets. They are also required to assess the value of this painting as a source of information for historians.
