Glaciers are one of Earth’s most vital natural resources, storing 69% of the world’s freshwater and playing a crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate. However, due to global warming, glaciers are retreating at an alarming rate, contributing to rising sea levels and threatening ecosystems and communities worldwide. The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Preservation, highlighting the urgent need to act now. Glaciers are not just a global concern; their melting impacts everyone, from water security to climate stability. By exploring the science behind glaciers and their role in our environment, students can understand the importance of preservation and take small actions to contribute to SDG 13: Climate Action.
