1st Time Bill Came Across Basketball

In September 1958, Bill returned to a new school year in St. Vincent's school to find baskets erected in the school yard which weren't there when they left in June. Bill enquired about the purpose of the baskets and he was told that the school was going to adopt a basketball programme. The basketball programme had the full support of the Christian Brothers community. They did their best to introduce basketball and to procure a coach (which they did - Brendan Buckley from Tralee).

Brendan arrived into the yard on his bicycle with a basketball in his carrier. There were about one hundred fellows waiting in a crammed room for Brendan. Brendan got straight onto the blackboard and put down a few things like basic concepts/the fundamentals and said that basketball is a game to be learned.
