Arithmetic - OL Booklet

Added: 14 Oct 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Guide/notes

A guided student exercise booklet for Ordinary Level Mathematics on Arithmetic put together by teacher Aoife McDonnell. Front page includes a reference for students on what teacher expects them to know about Arithmetic. Booklet was used as a revision practice and guide for students. The structured step-by-step format enables struggling students to gain confidence in their ability to tackle problems - giving them reassurance throughout problems. Problems are also broken down into mini-achievable parts so students come away from saying "I can't do it" to "I can do part 1 and maybe 2 of the problem" From here, other students begin to discuss as some students will say "I can do part 3 of the problem" Students begin to look to one another for answers in a carefully planned out booklet approach to revision. (Note: Some topics are missing from the front list as these were worksheets from a very good old workbook.)

How it maps to the curriculum

Strand unit: 1. Number Systems (Complex Numbers,Sequences)

Suggestions for use: A revision guide for students struggling with Ordinary Level Mathematics. Assign booklet for homework/ class work. Works successfully if teacher gets student to fill in the front cover after each lesson. (The date, and how many pages completed) By filling in the pages completed, students generate a competitive side to progressing which is often missing in weaker groups. Regular feedback is crucial to motivate the students daily/ weekly. (Stickers actually worked with a group I taught)
