Learning About Dogs

In this strand, students are encouraged to research and work with others as they learn about the lifecycle of dogs, the benefits of owning them and what is involved in looking after them. Here are sample lesson activities created and shared by L2LP teacher, Melanie Mc Inerney.

Ticket to Leave - 1:2

A reflection activity for students to record their learning on the life cycle of a dog. The exit ticket has two questions and space for students to answer. This activity could be used as a formative assessment.

Benefits of Having a Dog 1.4

Explore the benefits of having a dog with this presentation. The resource encourages students to examine pictures and discuss the reasons why people have dogs. At the end of the presentation, there is an online Kahoot Quiz. Students love using IT and this is a great way to see if the learning was successful!
You'll need internet and at least a smart phone/Ipad if you want to do the online quiz. If not laminate the pictures and play the game retro style like a card game using a timer!

Students can be enabled to use online research to find out positives and negatives of having a dog. Or, perhaps brainstorm ideas with the teacher acting out scenarios which relate to the theme. eg, Yeah! lets go on holidays for 2 weeks....but what will we do with the dog???

First you do the online quiz and then you find out which dog suits and finally you print off a picture to be put onto your dog passport PDF document.

If students have literacy issues perhaps read the questions and use PECS to Help the student answer the Qs
or write in their verbal answers for them.
Or write the answer and get them to stick this onto the line.
